Spam Musubis

Spam Musubis

From the first time we visited Hawaii in 2013, we’ve (minus Dean who’s afraid of canned meat) fallen in love with Spam Musubis. Something about the saltiness of the spam and the neutrality but satisfaction of the rice that makes everything feel just right. Read more about our Hawaii blog here.

Not only are they super easy to take on the go, it’s a huge protein kick especially when made with egg. Love that Costco now sells the low-sodium spam! I’ll take anything I can get 🙂

Here’s how we do it!

Spam Musubis

Ingredients

  • 1 can of spam
  • 5 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of mirin
  • 1/8 cup of dashi powder
  • 1 tbsp of roasted sesame seeds
  • 5 cups of cooked sushi/short grain rice
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar optional
  • 1 sheet of seaweed cut into strips

Instructions

  • Cut spam into 1/8 inch slices.
  • In a large skillet, gently sear each the spam on medium heat so they’re golden on each side.
  • Remove from heat and place/ blot with a paper towel to cool. Once cool, cut into 1/8 inch pieces.
  • Combine eggs, mirin, sesame seeds together well.
  • In a nonstick pan and a bit of neutral oil, add a small out of egg mixture, enough to thinly coat the pan. Once cooked, gently roll the egg onto one side. Pour more egg mixture for another thin layer of egg. Repeat this process for the rest of the mixture. Once complete, set aside to cool.
  • Place one piece of plastic wrap on the surface, take. onstrip of seaweed. Place 1 piece of spam on the seaweed. Form a nice retangular rice ball and place it on top.
  • Fold the seaweed strip over the the rice ball and wrap with the plastic wrap. You can use the plastic wrap to mold into the desired shape.
  • Store in the fridge and reheat in the microwave w/a loose, damp papertowel.
