CNY Party Planning

Every year we host a CNY party with all our friends/family. This year I want to step it up a bit by incorporating thoughtul games/ice-breakers to make it more fun and to ensure people are getting to know each other more instead of staying only within their circles. Follow me as I continue to refine the details here! Some thoughts I had include:

Seating/Stations:

Beverage Station (High-traffic)

  • Kitchen or beverage fridge
  • Away from main seating so people move

Include:

  • Alcohol + non-alcohol clearly separated
  • Pre-poured drinks or labels (less bottleneck)
  • A small sign: “Grab a drink & meet someone new 🍊”

This station will naturally mix groups.


Appetizer Station (Early party anchor)

Set this in a different room from beverages if possible.

  • High-top or counter-style
  • Plates + napkins only (no chairs)

This encourages:

  • Standing
  • Short convos
  • Movement

Dessert Station (Late-party energy shift)

Put dessert:

  • Farther from entrance
  • Near seating (coffee/tea zone works great)

Add:

  • Tea pot, kettle, cozy vibe
  • Conversation cards on the table

People will linger and talk.


Kids Zone (but not isolated)

Key rule: near adults, not hidden away.

  • Floor mats or low table
  • Craft + quest instructions
  • Teens naturally hover and help

This keeps the whole party integrated.

Lucky Quests:

The Lunar New Year “Lucky Quest” (for everyone)

Yes — I’d do ONE quest with different tiers, so kids, teens, and adults all participate without it feeling childish.

How it works (simple + visible)

  • Put a Quest Card at the entrance (basket on a table)
  • People complete any 5 tasks (not all)
  • When done → collect a Lucky Prize or enter a draw

This keeps it low-pressure and inclusive.


Quest Tasks (mix + match)

Aim for 12–15 total tasks, people choose 5.

Easy social mixers

  • Introduce yourself to someone you didn’t come with
  • Learn the name of someone under 18 / over 60
  • Share a New Year wish with someone new
  • Take a photo with someone from another group

Culture & fun

  • Say “Happy New Year” in Cantonese or Mandarin
  • Find someone born in the Year of the Snake (or Dragon/Rabbit)
  • Wear something red or gold and show it to someone
  • Learn one Chinese New Year food symbolism

Movement-based (gentle, optional)

  • Visit 3 different stations
  • Sit at a table you didn’t start at
  • Help a kid with an activity
  • Bring a snack or drink to someone else

Sweet connector (perfect for your MIL 💛)

  • Say hello and New Year wishes to Grandma
  • Sit and chat with an elder for 5 minutes
  • Ask someone older about a tradition they remember

👉 These let stationary guests participate fully without moving.

Party Flow (super simple)

Arrival

  • Quest cards at door
  • Drinks + appetizers open

Mid-party

  • Group toast / prosperity moment
  • Remind people about the quest

Later

  • Dessert + prize draw
  • Group photo
