I have a Porsche. Not just any Porsche – a grey Porsche 718 Spyder with the most perfect little pops of GT yellow. And while the car itself is obviously the dream, the story of how it ended up in my garage is actually my favourite part.
It wasn’t exactly a complete surprise. Dean had been thinking about it, and I knew he was looking at cars, because, well… Dean is Dean. He loves cars. He loves buying them, selling them, researching them and playing around with them. Cars have always been more his thing than mine. But he also knows me really well.
He knows how much I love convertibles. He knows that I love beautiful things and that I’m always drawn to things that make an everyday experience feel a little more special. And he knew that a Porsche 718 Spyder was something I would genuinely enjoy.
So somewhere along the way, he decided that this one should be mine. And honestly, that means more to me than if he had simply surprised me with a random expensive gift. Because he wasn’t buying it because he wanted another car to play with. He was buying it because he wanted me to have something I could enjoy and play with — even though cars are usually his thing.
I’ve always loved convertibles
I’ve always had a thing for convertibles.
There’s just something about driving with the roof down that makes an ordinary drive feel like an experience. I call it driving al fresco because that’s really what it feels like. You’re more connected to everything around you. You feel the sunshine and the air and the change in temperature. Even driving somewhere you’ve driven a hundred times can feel completely different when the top is down.
Is it practical?
Not always.
Do I care?
Not particularly. 😂
There are plenty of practical cars in the world. A convertible isn’t really about practicality. It’s about the feeling.
And that’s exactly what drew me to the Spyder.
So… how did I end up with a 718 Spyder?
The funny thing about Dean is that he doesn’t just like buying nice things. He genuinely likes seeing people use and enjoy the nice things he buys.
He’s actually been pretty adamant that I drive this car.
And I mean drive it.
Not just take it out occasionally when the weather is perfect. Not keep it safely tucked away in the garage. Not treat it like some priceless object that I’m afraid to touch.
He wants me to enjoy it.
That is something I’ve come to appreciate about him over the years. He’s the same way with other things he’s bought for me — my designer shoes, my bags, all of those beautiful things that could easily end up sitting in a closet because I’m worried about scratching them or wearing them out.
He’ll basically tell me: What’s the point of having it if you’re never going to use it?
And he’s right.
A beautiful pair of shoes isn’t meant to live permanently in its box.
A beautiful handbag isn’t meant to sit on a shelf forever.
And apparently, a Porsche isn’t meant to spend its life parked in the garage.
It’s meant to be driven.
It’s meant to get a little dirty.
It’s meant to go places.
It’s meant to become part of your life.
And I think that’s one of the things I love most about this gift. Dean didn’t give me something beautiful so I could carefully preserve it. He gave me something beautiful because he wanted me to experience it.
The car itself
My 718 Spyder is grey, which I love because it’s sophisticated and understated from a distance.
And then you notice the yellow.
The yellow seat belts. The yellow interior accents. The little pops of GT yellow around the dash and clock. The yellow door handles.
Those details completely sold me.
The grey makes the car feel elegant, but the yellow gives it personality. It feels playful without being too loud, which is very much my style.
And, naturally, now that I own a car with yellow accents, I’ve started looking for excuses to introduce more yellow into my life.
Because apparently owning a Porsche has turned me into someone who coordinates accessories with her car.
A yellow Hermès twilly?
Possibly.
A little yellow keychain?
Absolutely.
A bow?
We’re entering dangerous territory.
😂
My grey Gucci scarf and Fendi Monster bag already seem to belong in the car, and I’m having way too much fun thinking about the little details that could make the whole experience feel even more “me.”
The car has officially become an accessory.
The pickup was really about me
One of my favourite parts of the whole experience was actually picking it up.
Dean made the entire dealership pickup feel like something that was for me, rather than simply a transaction to pick up a car.
He insisted that my girlfriend come with me.
He wanted me to have someone there to share the moment with, and he even made this adorable video of the two of us driving out of Porsche Centre Markham together.
And I love that he did that.
Because again, that’s Dean in a nutshell. He wasn’t just excited about getting the car. He was excited about me enjoying the car.
He wanted me to have the moment, to have the memory and he wanted me to share it.
That little video of us driving out of the dealership is probably one of the things I’ll treasure just as much as the photos of the Porsche itself.
Because years from now, I don’t think I’m going to remember exactly what the dealership looked like or what paperwork I signed.
I’ll remember sitting in that car with my girlfriend, driving out with the top down, knowing that this was something Dean had chosen specifically for me.
And now I actually have to drive it
Of course, there’s one tiny problem with owning a Porsche.
You actually have to park it 😂 I love this car. I really do. But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little terrified every time I have to squeeze it into a parking space.
Especially underground parking, tight spaces when there are people watching.
There is a very specific kind of anxiety that comes from knowing you are driving a beautiful car into a parking spot that suddenly seems approximately 14% smaller than it did when you approached it.
I do not want to be the person who finally gets her dream Porsche and immediately introduces it to a concrete pillar.
So yes, there has been a learning curve. But I’m getting more comfortable.
And I think that’s part of the experience too. I’m learning the car. I’m becoming more confident driving it. I’m figuring out where I feel comfortable taking it and where I don’t.
And little by little, I’m letting myself stop being nervous about it and actually enjoy it.
Because that’s what Dean keeps reminding me to do: Enjoy it.
So where will the Spyder take me?
I’m not entirely sure yet.
And I kind of love that.
Maybe it’ll become part of my travel stories.
Maybe there will be more Porsche events and road trips.
Maybe Dean and I will find some beautiful roads and spend an afternoon driving with absolutely nowhere we need to be.
Maybe it’ll become part of my videos and photos and everything I’m creating.
Maybe I’ll eventually stop being terrified of parking it.
😂
But whatever happens, I know this car is going to become part of our memories.
And when I look back at the photos of the day I picked it up, I don’t think I’ll just see a Porsche.
I’ll see Dean.
I’ll see my girlfriend sitting beside me.
I’ll remember driving out of the dealership.
I’ll remember how excited I was.
And I’ll remember that this wasn’t really a gift about a car.
It was a gift about joy.
About having something fun to play with.
About experiencing beautiful things instead of saving them for “someday.”
And about having a husband who knows exactly how much I love driving with the roof down.
So here’s to the adventures, the road trips, the sunny afternoons, the questionable parking decisions and all the memories we’re going to make along the way.
And yes…
top down, of course. ☀️💛
